Olivia Munn admits she ‘barely knew’ John Mulaney when she got pregnant adding it ‘wasn’t anything close to dating’
Olivia Munn has revealed her courtship with husband John Mulaney was anything but conventional.
The actress, 44, who recently revealed her mastectomy scars in a Skims campaign, told GQ for the 2024 Men of the Year issue their relationship ‘wasn’t anything close to dating,’ when she got pregnant with their first child.
‘I barely knew him,’ she admitted to the publication.
Munn originally met the comedian, 42, when they were both at Seth Myers’ wedding in 2013.
The two reconnected when Mulaney got out of rehab in early 2021.
The Emmy winner had split from his wife, Anna Marie Tendler, and was looking for a new place to live. Munn referred him to a friend who might help. He then sent her a thanks for the recommendation and they ended up getting together briefly.

When the Newsroom actress told Mulaney she was pregnant, she said he was excited about the baby.
‘It wasn’t necessarily “ee’re going to be married and live together” or any of that, but it was “I will be involved in some way.”
The pair were bi-coastal with Munn living in Los Angeles and Mulaney was in New York City, but they would talk occasionally and the comic would travel to LA to visit.
The Hit-Monkey voice actress’ hesitance to embark on a relationship was understandable.
‘It was like watching a man in a tsunami,’ she told the magazine.
‘I was watching someone newly sober, at the edge of a cliff, and I didn’t know him well enough to help him.’
Mulaney admitted he was afraid of a relapse, but Munn said the idea of becoming a father was ‘the one thing that made him seem light and happy. I remember he was really excited to tell his parents.
‘In my head, I’m thinking, “I don’t know really what’s happening with this guy. It feels pretty shaky,”‘ she explained.
‘But then I would see him at the Troubadour and be like, “Man, he’s on fire. He’s just that phenomenal.”‘

Before having Malcolm, almost three, the couple decided Munn would randomly drug test Maloney to keep him from relapsing. ‘It’s like a relief,’ Mulaney told GQ. ‘I like to be able to not even have that be a question in her or anyone else’s mind’
To perhaps ease both of their fears, the Love Wedding Repeat star staged a mini-intervention when she was six months pregnant with their son Malcolm, almost three.
The pair agreed she would administer random drug tests to make sure he stayed clean, a practice that has become part of their routine.
‘It’s like a relief,’ Mulaney told GQ. ‘I like to be able to not even have that be a question in her or anyone else’s mind. Something about peeing in that cup is like, “I’m walking this walk.” It gives me confidence.’ Munn and Mulaney decided to become a couple two months before their son’s birth November 24, 2021.
Munn has recently dealt with her own health issues, after being diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing a double mastectomy and a hysterectomy earlier this year.
