Robert Salata MD, an infectious diseases specialist based in Cleveland, Ohio, has died.

Salata ‘suddenly passed away’ on Monday, August 26th 2024. No cause of death has been publicly revealed.

He was a Professor of Medicine and served as the Physician-in-chief at the University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center (UHCMC), and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University since 2015.

He is the founding Director of the Infectious Diseases and Immunology Institute at the School of Medicine at Case Western.

In a glowing tribute, a colleague, Pierre Gholam, said of Salata: “…His impact on improving the lives of persons living with communicable diseases will be felt on many continents for decades. I never saw as much excitement and enthusiasm in his tone as when he was speaking about the work he was spearheading in Uganda and other parts of sub saharan Africa,”
